The tomb of the unknown soldier. After the second WW, five different bodies were chosen from all over Belgium and a blind soldier picked one to lie here to represent all the lost lives of men and women who fought. Coincidently, today is Liberation Day for the Netherlands and it is a HUGE deal here. Flowers at monuments, flames burning bright, concerts in the city, day off from work, and moments of silence
Manneken-Pis
This famous Brussels statue has an ever changing wardrobe, over 800 costumes to be exact. There are several legends about his story and word is that he's been around from the late 1300's. Mostly, all stories say that he represents a boy who peed and saved the country.
I walked my shoes off on Brussels' cobblestone streets (my poor and once beautiful shoes can prove it). The town has many more hills than found anywhere in the Netherlands and walking nine hours did take it's toll on me. However, it should be noted that I am ready for the Marines--nine hours straight walking with my overstuffed backpack--I am set!
