Waffles are lovely, but better in Belgium

This past weekend I went to check out Bruges and Brussels in Belgium:
Bruges is nicknamed the Venice of the North. This little Flemish town is renowned for its adorable canals, serene parks and overall romantic atmosphere. My friend Hans viciously argued that no, Amsterdam holds that title. We Wikipedia-ed it...half a dozen cities claim that title.

Nevertheless, Bruges is a wonderful town! Very historic, perfect for walks and exploring. Also, people there are VERY adamant about the fact that they speak Flemish not Dutch--thing is...it's the exact same thing...

Bruges' town hall, because who doesn't have a town hall like this?
Michaelangelo's "Madonna and Child"
It is reportedly the only piece of his that left Italy during his lifetime

Right up there is the The Basilica of the Holy Blood (Heilig-Bloedbasiliek). The relic is supposed to be part of a cloth with Christ's blood, and every year it turns from fixed to fluid--there's a procession on May 1 about it. I arrived the 2nd, but I feel like it's the same thing. It was pretty intimidating going up to see it. Oh and if you wanted you could touch it! I didn't. It actually all freaked me out a bit. But devout Catholics take this with all severe seriousness. The relic is "guarded" by a priest and another official with some sort of badge. There were several other security people on the premise. The overall experience was quite interesting though.
